Project Context
A project I was involved in as a Humber College student in 2021, was a remote usability test for the widely popular design tool, Canva.com. Specifically, their video editing tool. This was introduced in 2020, with the purpose of retaining Canva users within their platform and eliminating the learning curve and time that comes with learning new software.
“Our mission is to empower everyone to design anything without any complex software or having to go to a different sources for different elements...“we’re bringing the same experience to our video editing tool.”
— Chief Product Officer Cameron Adams
Reflection
I was excited to apply everything I learned to conduct this usability test and with the knowledge I gained, I was much more confident. I refined my skills of how to put together a usability test plan and to conduct and be able to think critically of design solutions. Although due to time constraints, we weren’t able to conduct preliminary user research, we were able to watch the recordings of the usability tests, which allowed us to feel empathy for users and keep their experiences in mind throughout the project.
Learning Outcome
Since we used the trial of Lookback.io, we weren't able to view the statistical data. This may have seemed like a drawback but instead, we took the opportunity to learn how to manually calculate the outcomes by using realistic UX KPIs that we initially had established to use.
Applying behavioural UX KPIs assisted in learning about the functionality of Canva’s editing tool and what users do. In addition to user research, a next step would be to collect attitudinal UX KPIs l (what they say) as another way to see how users rate Canva’s video editing tool and other functions.
Overall, Canva.com is a powerful all-in-one, easy-to-use, design tool that many users rely on and enjoy using. They have a lot to offer their users and are continuously making improvements to enhance the end-user experience.
